Gait Analysis | Applications for a Pediatric Population

This course will review the biomechanics of typical and pathologic gait using knowledge derived from the Center for Gait and Motion Analysis (CGMA) at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. Lectures will focus on understanding basic kinematics and kinetics of normal gait, the components of a gait analysis (including physical examination, data collection, and interpretation), lever arm dysfunction, Spasticity Team Evaluations (SPEV), and a comprehensive evaluation of the foot. Case studies will reinforce concepts discussed in lectures. Participants will receive instruction from a Gillette physician and physical therapists from the CGMA.

Presenter: 

Tom F. Novacheck, MD is currently the Associate Medical Director and Immediate past Chief of Staff at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, St. Paul, MN where he specializes in pediatric orthopaedic surgery specializing in cerebral palsy and other complex orthopaedic conditions with an emphasis on hip reconstruction. Dr. Novacheck also serves as a Professor of Orthopaedics at University of Minnesota; Director, Commission on Motion Lab Accreditation; and 2nd Vice President elect, AACPDM.
 
Dr. Novacheck completed his medical degree from UW Madison (1985), orthopaedic residency at Pennsylvania State University (1990), and pediatric orthopaedic fellowship at Newington Children’s (1991).
His research/teaching includes: motion analysis testing methods and reporting, normal and pathological gait, CP pathology, CP gait management treatment and outcomes, and has been part of the annual gait course teaching faculty since 1991.
 
Sue Sohrweide, PT II, has worked as a physical therapist in the James R. Gage Center for Gait and Motion Analysis at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, MN since 1996. Gillette places an emphasis on family centered care and a lifetime approach to patients with childhood-onset disabilities. 
 
Sue’s clinical work includes children with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, neuromuscular disorders, and orthopedic issues impacting gait.  She works with a multi-disciplinary team for evaluation and treatment for patients undergoing spasticity reduction and multi-level orthopedic procedures. Sue has presented nationally and internationally regarding the biomechanics and evaluation of feet, as well as gait analysis for children with cerebral palsy.
 
She is a member of the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society.
 
Sue graduated with her BS in education from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1980. She furthered her education and received her certificate in Physical Therapy from Mayo School of Health related Sciences, Rochester, MN. In 1982.
 
Katie Walt, PT II, has worked as a physical therapist in the James R. Gage Center for Gait and Motion Analysis at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, MN. Gillette places an emphasis on family centered care and a lifetime approach to patients with childhood-onset disabilities. 
 
Katie’s clinical work includes children with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, neuromuscular disorders, and orthopedic issues impacting gait.  She works with a multi-disciplinary team for evaluation and treatment for patients undergoing spasticity reduction and multi-level orthopedic procedures.  Katie has presented nationally regarding the rehabilitation following multi-level single-event surgeries for children with cerebral palsy.
 
She is a member of the Pediatric section of the American Physical Therapy Association, the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society, and the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
 
Katie graduated with her M.A. in Physical Therapy at College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minnesota in 1991. She furthered her education and received her transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Des Moines University, Des Moines, Iowa in 2009.
